VENTURO
The innovative insect vacuum
VENTURO, the innovative insect vacuum: removing pest insects mechanically – entirely without additional plant protection products. Developed for strawberry growing together with 4DISC GmbH.
In strawberry growing, the products available against pest insects are becoming scarcer and scarcer. That is why Joachim Thees developed an insect vacuum together with 4DISC GmbH: air whirls pest insects such as thrips, aphids, bugs or spotted wing drosophila up out of the crop and fans suck them in – mechanically, without the use of insecticides.

Awarded
VENTURO receives the expoSE Innovation Prize 2026
Among 32 entries, an independent expert jury has awarded our insect vacuum. Awarded by the Verband Süddeutscher Spargel- und Erdbeeranbauer e.V.
The prize will be presented on 18 November 2026 at expoSE & expoDirekt at Messe Karlsruhe.
Facts
- Working width can be adapted to the individual farm
- Front-mounted, electrically driven via a generator or hydraulically
- Travel speed 3–4 km/h
- Approx. 5 hectares of area output per day in protected cultivation
- Boom can be folded in on both sides for transport and manoeuvring
- Modular design – suitable for different row and dam widths
- Use in the polytunnel or on table-top systems
Suitable against
- Thrips
- Bugs
- Spotted wing drosophila
- Whitefly
How the insect vacuum works
The fans sit side by side on a metal frame. To the left and right of each fan, a hose blows air into the strawberry crop and startles the insects. As soon as they are in the air, the fan sucks them upwards – kill plates mounted above at a 45° angle do the rest. Height and airflow can be adapted to the crop, and everything is conveniently controlled from the driver’s cab. For transport and manoeuvring, the boom can be folded in on both sides.
Disturb, suck, done.
How the VENTURO works
- 1Air flows in from diagonally below, past the fruit and into the crop.
- 2The insects are startled and sucked upwards.
- 3The angled plates above do the rest.

Benefits
- Mechanical pest control entirely without additional plant protection products
- Counteracts the development of resistance that is encouraged by frequent use of chemical active substances
- The plants remain undamaged – height and airflow can be adapted individually to the crop
- Modular design, suitable for different row and dam widths
- Perfect for use in the polytunnel or on table-top systems
- Developed in cooperation with 4DISC GmbH, specialist in arable and orchard machinery
- Currently also being adapted to other cultivation systems such as green asparagus and leeks
Because the insect vacuum does not work selectively, its use should be planned in a similar way to plant protection products that are hazardous to bees – for example outside the period of bee flight or with the bumblebee boxes closed.
Spotted wing drosophila: a pest for which there are hardly any remedies
Originally from East Asia, the spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) has now also arrived in northern Germany and is causing more and more problems for many farms – in strawberry growing as well as in raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.
- Unlike native fly species, it attacks healthy, ripening fruit.
- A female lays up to 400 eggs in the fruit, and the larvae develop within a few days.
- Infested fruit becomes soft and collapses, which additionally encourages fungal infestation.
- Under favourable conditions, up to five generations are possible.
- Effective insecticides are not available in Germany, or only as a time-limited emergency authorisation.
This is exactly where the insect vacuum comes in: it removes the spotted wing drosophila mechanically from the crop – without additional plant protection products. Experts recommend a combination of different measures for this pest, such as frequent picking, rapid cooling after harvest and crop protection nets. VENTURO is added as a mechanical measure without insecticide.
Developed with 4DISC
We are developing the insect vacuum together with 4DISC GmbH. 4DISC builds the machines on our behalf, and they are marketed together with us. The company was founded in 2019 by a community of mechanical engineers and arable and fruit farmers. This combination of agricultural practice and technical know-how enables completely new approaches and solutions for the typical challenges of modern arable and fruit growing.
Experience it live: expoSE & expoDirekt 2026
18–19 November 2026, Messe Karlsruhe
You will find us with the insect vacuum at expoSE & expoDirekt – Germany’s largest trade fair for the direct marketing of fruit and vegetables.
What happens next?
Development is not yet complete: in the future, Thees is thinking about autonomous carrier vehicles, and a combination with further methods such as UV light against mildew is also conceivable. In addition, the insect vacuum is currently being adapted to further cultivation systems such as green asparagus and leeks.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the VENTURO insect vacuum?
- VENTURO is a mechanical insect vacuum for strawberry growing. Air whirls pest insects up out of the crop and fans suck them in – without additional plant protection products. It was developed by Joachim Thees together with 4DISC GmbH and is marketed by Thees Dammtec.
- Which pests does the insect vacuum help against?
- Against thrips, aphids, bugs, spotted wing drosophila and whitefly.
- Why is the spotted wing drosophila so hard to control?
- The spotted wing drosophila attacks healthy, ripening fruit; a female lays up to 400 eggs, and up to five generations are possible. Effective insecticides are not available in Germany, or only as a time-limited emergency authorisation. The insect vacuum removes it mechanically from the crop, without additional plant protection products.
- How does the machine work?
- The fans sit side by side on a metal frame. To the left and right of each fan, a hose blows air into the crop, the insects fly up and are sucked upwards; kill plates mounted above at a 45° angle do the rest. Height and airflow can be adapted to the crop, and the plants remain undamaged.
- What is the area output?
- The prototype has a working width of 4.80 m and travels at 3 to 4 km/h. According to Joachim Thees, it manages approx. 5 hectares per day in protected cultivation. It is driven electrically by a generator at the rear.
- Are bees and beneficial insects at risk?
- The insect vacuum does not work selectively. Its use must therefore be planned in a similar way to plant protection products that are hazardous to bees – for example after the period of bee flight or with the bumblebee boxes closed.
- Which crops and cultivation systems is VENTURO intended for?
- It was developed for strawberry growing in the polytunnel or on table-top systems; the modular design suits different row and dam widths. It is currently also being adapted to other cultivation systems such as green asparagus and leeks.
- Has the insect vacuum received an award?
- Yes. VENTURO was awarded the expoSE Innovation Prize 2026 by the Verband Süddeutscher Spargel- und Erdbeeranbauer e.V. (Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers) – among 32 entries and by an independent expert jury. The certificate will be presented on 18 November 2026 at expoSE & expoDirekt at Messe Karlsruhe.
- Where can I see the insect vacuum?
- You will find us with the insect vacuum at expoSE & expoDirekt on 18 and 19 November 2026 at Messe Karlsruhe. Pictures and videos from field use can be found in our gallery.
